So you might expect sweet music of some sort. But this is a food podcast about design and we have creative experiments…
I’m Lydia, I do the nerdery for our podcasts and this has been interesting.
I’ve been looking for digital tools that enable me to draw with sound. This month, I’ve drawn hearts and roses, the motifs from our visual experiments, on an online tool with a limited menu of backgrounds and associated sounds.
But because my creative work begins at the thinking end of a project, and my digital practice is rooted in physical media, I like thinking on paper, the unpredictability of physical materials and the opportunities I have for intervention.
So I tried sound recording with things that are both studio and snack: a heart-shaped cookie cutter and a kebab stick; the sound of drawing the cookie cutter. The sound is a lot weirder – but it’s our very own bit of weirdness.
Narcis has been playing with more random AI tools for music, one with sampling his recordings of bags and munching. “Not good at all”, he says… Another tool has put titles to images and suggested a sound track, first, an odd mismatch, then from the text, “A jingle with sounds of popcorn”, a meditation track… So what Narcis has learned this month is that though an app can look really good, he might need some music lessons to get better results.
