For our Mother’s Day episode, we’ve been chatting about family recipes and playing with words.
Foraging for handed-down kitchen equipment, I found my mum’s hand whisk. I use it rarely and of course, most people now would use a food processor instead – but it’s a wonderful mechanical thing. The sound reminds me of a lemon pudding we used to have. So I recorded it for this month’s sound sample. That turned out to be remarkably difficult – the memory is soft but the sound is sharp. So it took several goes to get something mellow enough to use as a starting point.
When I illustrated it, it had to have movement because that’s at the heart of its character. It’s not designed to be still…
