Seeds

In Episodes, Season4 by Lydia Thornley

April is peak seed-sowing season, Lydia is an experienced but terrible gardener, and Narcis is now a proud first-time gardener. So for this month’s episode… We present you with seeds

Popcorn is an exploded seed. And your morning coffee is brewed from ground seeds. In this month’s nerdery we discover that seeds are the oldest snack we’ve researched and we look into the future by learning about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

And we have not one, but two WhatsApp interviews: One is with Maisie at Hearth Bakery, who gives us really interesting insights on the parallels of running a business and planting as well as how important it is to get people excited to grow their own food. The other interview is with Monica at the Trampery, who has just opened a garden for its co-working community, and sees links with having the right conditions and the right plants to grow the Trampery community.

This month’s creative experiment? Using seed packet design as a metaphor for branding and communication design process. And trying out typefaces to tell the stories of successful (and unsuccessful) planting with project parallels: an Edwardian Script sweet pea sown too early and too shallow; a brush script squash gone wayward; and a bendy Baskerville bolting bean, sown and then left…
