This month at Studio Snack, we’re going full autumnal: we bring you Pie.
From ancient Egypt’s oat-crusted honey bakes to Yorkshire’s record-breaking giants, Lydia dives into the wonderful nerdery of pie history.
We also share a magical visit to the V&A East Storehouse – what a place! We viewed two objects: a costume drawing of “The Pie” from Mother Goose and an amazing Beatrix Potter illustration, which turned out to have a note from the publisher. A reminder that the process of creativity is timeless.
Experiments
And of course, we got experimental.
Lydia reimagined pie charts as actual pies, with beetroot and saffron coloured pastry.
Narcis went hands-on, baking his data into a pie chart – and attempting to colour each section by baking it for a different length of time.
What have we learned?
- Research in real life is an experience and can reveal more than online research.
- Going to do research in library or museum brings a story into your piece.
- Not to feel intimidated – archivists love having researchers come to look at objects.
